A good teacher…

By Murray Bourne, 13 Dec 2005

According to Yr 8 students in Britain, a good teacher...

is kind
is generous
listens to you
encourages you
has faith in you
keeps confidences
likes teaching students
likes teaching their subject
takes time to explain things
helps you when you're stuck
tells you how you are doing
allows you to have your say
doesn't give up on you
cares for your opinion
makes you feel clever
treats people equally
stands up for you
makes allowances
tells the truth
is forgiving

(McBer report, 2000)

For some teachers, these characteristics come naturally. For other teachers, there is little interest in what the students think.

Interesting to reflect on...

HTML: You can use simple tags like <b>, <a href="...">, etc.

To enter math, you can can either:

  1. Use simple calculator-like input in the following format (surround your math in backticks, or qq on tablet or phone):
    `a^2 = sqrt(b^2 + c^2)`
(See more on ASCIIMath syntax); or
  2. Use simple LaTeX in the following format. Surround your math with \( and \).
    \( \int g dx = \sqrt{\frac{a}{b}} \)
    (This is standard simple LaTeX.)

NOTE: You can mix both types of math entry in your comment.
