Mathematical Moments - a great resource

By Murray Bourne, 13 Dec 2006

The American Mathematical Society has produced an interesting set of posters that depict the many uses of mathematics in "real life". The series is called Mathematical Moments.

There are around 50 topics, including:

Mapping the brain:
brain

Tracking Internet traffic
internet

Math in the Movies (about CGI effects)
math in the movies

They have supplied "short versions" as well, with less verbiage and larger pictures.

The disappointment for me is that the photos are quite pixelated. When you print them in A4 size (US Letter), they are not very attractive. There is one poster (Enhancing your Image) about image improvement and at least that poster has reasonable image quality.

HTML: You can use simple tags like <b>, <a href="...">, etc.

To enter math, you can can either:

  1. Use simple calculator-like input in the following format (surround your math in backticks, or qq on tablet or phone):
    `a^2 = sqrt(b^2 + c^2)`
(See more on ASCIIMath syntax); or
  2. Use simple LaTeX in the following format. Surround your math with \( and \).
    \( \int g dx = \sqrt{\frac{a}{b}} \)
    (This is standard simple LaTeX.)

NOTE: You can mix both types of math entry in your comment.
