Fly Carbon Neutral

[05 Feb 2009]

I recently booked a domestic flight in Australia and was offered the following during the checkout portion:

Help reduce the impact of carbon emissions on the environment by offsetting your share of flight emissions of 0.292 tonnes (C02-e) with just a small contribution.

Your contribution will go towards greenhouse gas abatement approved by the Australian Government’s Greenhouse FriendlyTM accreditation program. Contributions are not refundable.

It was about US$2 for the 1-hour trip. It would be interesting to know how they calculate the offset for this Fly Carbon Neutral program.

I just wonder whether this is a “pay to reduce guilt” situation. Does it really help to reduce carbon emissions?
