{"id":934,"date":"2008-01-03T12:41:37","date_gmt":"2008-01-03T04:41:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/?p=934"},"modified":"2014-11-15T09:59:56","modified_gmt":"2014-11-15T01:59:56","slug":"twenty-global-problems-and-twenty-years-to-solve-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/environment\/twenty-global-problems-and-twenty-years-to-solve-them-934","title":{"rendered":"Twenty Global Problems and Twenty Years to Solve Them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/letters\/the-intmath-newsletter-dec-2007-896\">December IntMath Newsletter<\/a>, I challenged my readers to:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>... use their education in ways that will improve relationships between people and improve the sorry state of the world.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sounds like a good idea, but what can we do? <\/p>\n<p>In the book <em class=\"textem\">High Noon: Twenty Global Problems and Twenty Years to Solve Them<\/em>, Jean-Francois Rischard outlines some important issues that we have to get right in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully there is something on this list that you can work on, either individually, or with your school or community. Heck, you could even join global organisations that are working on these issues. <\/p>\n<h2>Sharing our planet: Issues involving the global commons <\/h2>\n<p>  1.  Global warming<br \/>\n  2.  Biodiversity and ecosystem losses<br \/>\n  3.  Fisheries depletion<br \/>\n  4.  Deforestation<br \/>\n  5.  Water deficits<\/p>\n<p>[Reduction in population growth, paper use and energy consumption will go a long way to solving each of these 5 problems.]<\/p>\n<h2>Sharing our humanity: Issues requiring global commitment <\/h2>\n<p>  6.  Maritime safety and pollution<br \/>\n  7.  Massive step-up in the fight against  poverty<br \/>\n  8.  Peacekeeping, conflict prevention, combating terrorism<br \/>\n  9.  Education for all<br \/>\n10.  Global infectious diseases<br \/>\n11.  Digital divide<br \/>\n12.  Natural disaster prevention and mitigation<\/p>\n<p>[Actually, number 9, 'Education for all' will go a long way to solving most of the problems 6 to 12.]<\/p>\n<h2>Sharing our rule book: Issues needing a global regulatory approach<\/h2>\n<p>13.  Reinventing taxation for the 21st Century<br \/>\n14.  Biotechnology rules<br \/>\n15.  Global financial architecture<br \/>\n16.  Illegal drugs<br \/>\n17.  Trade, investment, and competition rules<br \/>\n18.  Intellectual property rights<br \/>\n19.  E-commerce rules<br \/>\n20.  International labor and migration rules<\/p>\n<p>[These actually look the most challenging to me, since it will be very difficult to reach global consensus on any of them.]<\/p>\n<p>So there's your challenge for 2008 and beyond. <\/p>\n<p>Mathematics is involved in the solutions for all these problems.
