{"id":908,"date":"2007-11-24T09:26:19","date_gmt":"2007-11-24T01:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/?p=908"},"modified":"2012-08-11T15:10:31","modified_gmt":"2012-08-11T07:10:31","slug":"ecological-footprint-quiz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/environment\/ecological-footprint-quiz-908","title":{"rendered":"Ecological footprint quiz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here's an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.footprintnetwork.org\/en\/index.php\/GFN\/page\/calculators\/\">Ecological footprint calculator<\/a> which helps you to determine what impact you are having on the Earth's resources. <\/p>\n<p>After answering the 14 questions in the quiz, the depressing outcome for me was:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>TOTAL FOOTPRINT: 23 ACRES<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This means that my lifestyle 'requires' 23 acres (equivalent to 9.3 hectares). This is quite something, considering I have no car, I walk to work, I don't eat much meat and lately, I have not travelled overseas much.<\/p>\n<p>It continues:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p> WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 4.5 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE ACRES PER PERSON.<\/p>\n<p>IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 5.2 PLANETS.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Groan...<\/p>\n<p><b>Note 1:<\/b> Of course, these things are accurate &plusmn;50%. For example, there was no question about air conditioner use in the quiz. In Singapore, many people run their air-cons overnight at ridiculously low temperatures (like 18&deg;C). We don't, since it is quite unnecessary. This should have a large impact on the footprint figures.<\/p>\n<p><b>Note 2:<\/b> This ecological footprint quiz reminds me of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/environment\/three-trees-to-offset-my-carbon-output-494\">carbon footprint tool<\/a> that I wrote about earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"alt\"><a href=\"#respond\" id=\"comms\">Be the first to comment<\/a> below.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How much of the Earth do you need to sustain your lifestlye?
