Music and Phi<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2013\/09\/phi-music-3.png\" alt=\"Music and phi\" height=\"160\" width=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Phi (&Phi;) is known as the &quot;Golden Ratio&quot; and has value 1.618 033 988... It is the positive solution to the equation &Phi;<sup>2<\/sup> &minus; &Phi; &minus; 1 = 0 and has some quite remarkable properties.<\/p>\n<p>Phi and its reciprocal, 1\/&Phi; = 0.618 033 988... have been observed to occur in nature. The &Phi; ratio has a connection to the Fibonacci numbers (the ratio of successive Fibonacci numbers approach the value &Phi;.)<\/p>\n<p>Many people believe that beauty is related to this Golden Ratio. If someone has body proportions (and facial proportions) which follow the Golden Ratio, we tend to find such people &quot;attractive&quot;. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/numbers\/math-of-beauty.php\">Math of Beauty<\/a>.) <\/p>\n<p>I came across the following article recently, where it talks about how the Golden Ratio is used in computer game music, to make it more pleasing to the ear, and to provide contrast via climaxes: <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetanooki.com\/2007\/03\/03\/zelda-music-of-golden-proportions\/\" title=\"Permalink to Zelda Music of Golden Proportions\" rel=\"bookmark\">Zelda Music of Golden Proportions<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here's a short music video based on Phi by Michael Blake: <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=W_Ob-X6DMI4\">What Phi (the golden ratio) sounds like<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h2>3. Maps that  help you make sense of the world<\/h2>\n<p>Here's a nice resource. I love maps and I love visual statistics, and this interesting collection has both.<\/p>\n<p> In  <a href=\"http:\/\/twistedsifter.com\/2013\/08\/maps-that-will-help-you-make-sense-of-the-world\/\">Maps that will help you make sense of the world<\/a>, by &quot;Twisted Sifter&quot;, we learn about global distribution of all sorts of things, including researchers, vegetation, McDonalds, alcohol consumption, writing types and many more. <\/p>\n<p>Here's one of the maps, showing the distribution of people by latitude. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twistedsifter.com\/2013\/08\/maps-that-will-help-you-make-sense-of-the-world\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2013\/09\/population-2.png\" alt=\"Maps that help you make sense of the world\" width=\"490\" height=\"295\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is how math relates to the real world - it helps us to describe the human condition. <\/p>\n<h2>4. IntMath Poll<\/h2>\n<p>The recent IntMath poll asked readers how they feel about summer holidays.<\/p>\n<p>The most interesting thing about this result is the 17% who regard summer holidays as &quot;too long&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>  <strong>I feel summer holidays are:<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>Not long enough: 63%<\/p>\n<p>About the right length: 20%<\/p>\n<p>Too long: 17%<\/p>\n<p>Total votes: <strong>1800<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Current IntMath poll: <\/strong>Now that summer holidays are over for most of you, the latest poll asks how you feel about school. Math puzzles<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/letters\/intmath-newsletter-good-math-teachers-writelatex-timss-8419#puzzle\">puzzle in the last IntMath Newsletter<\/a> asked about the distance travelled by a car in a fuel efficiency test.<\/p>\n<p>Correct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/letters\/intmath-newsletter-good-math-teachers-writelatex-timss-8419#comments\">answers with explanation<\/a> were given by  Francis Kisner and Sai Krishna.<\/p>\n<p id=\"puzzle\"><strong>New math puzzle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Estimate the probability that a  woman who has a positive mammogram actually has breast cancer, even though she's in a low-risk group: 40 to 50 years  old, with no symptoms or family history of breast cancer. For what you are seeking is also seeking you.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I see it all the time when students have a clear vision about what they are doing and where they are going.
