Special math events  in March <\/h2>\n<p><strong>a. Pi Day (14 Mar)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The number <strong>pi<\/strong> = 3.141592... arises in many different fields of mathematics, not just in circles! <\/p>\n<p>Mar 14 (3.14) is celebrated as Pi Day. Meanwhile, some mathematicians think <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/mathematics\/lets-drop-pi-5665\">we should drop pi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers Yee and Kondo claim to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.numberworld.org\/misc_runs\/pi-5t\/details.html\">calculated Pi to 10 trillion digits<\/a> on 17 Oct 2011.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>b. Brain Awareness Week (12 to 18 Mar, 2012) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brain Awareness Week aims to promote the public and personal benefits of brain research. It's organized by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dana.org\/BAW\/\">Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfn.org:80\/public-outreach\/brain-awareness-week?pagename=baw_home\">Society for Neuroscience<\/a> <\/p>\n<p><strong>c. Expanding Your Horizons<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The mission of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eyhn.org\/\">Expanding Your Horizons Network<\/a> is to encourage young women to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. Birthdays<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are some mathematically significant March birthdays: <\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-roman\">\n<li>Jules Antoine <strong>Lissajous<\/strong>, French mathematician, famous for the interesting curves called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/trigonometric-graphs\/7-lissajous-figures.php\">Lissajous Figures<\/a> (born 4 Mar 1822) <\/li>\n<li>Gerardus <strong>Mercator<\/strong>, map maker, known for the Mercator Projection world map (born 5 March 1512)<\/li>\n<li>Albert <strong>Einstein<\/strong> (born 14 Mar 1879) <\/li>\n<li>Ren&eacute; <strong>Descartes<\/strong>, mathematician and philosopher, developer of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/functions-and-graphs\/3-rectangular-coordinates.php\">cartesian <em>x-y<\/em> coordinate system<\/a> (born 31 Mar 1596) <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"puzzle\">4. Math Puzzles<\/h2>\n<p>There were plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/letters\/intmath-newsletter-interactive-ellipses-wolfram-education-portal-7045#comments\">responses<\/a> to the puzzle I presented in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/letters\/intmath-newsletter-interactive-ellipses-wolfram-education-portal-7045\">last IntMath Newsletter<\/a> about Egyptian fractions. <\/p>\n<p>The correct answer, 1\/2 + 1\/3 + 1\/78, was given by Don, Tomas, Laureli, Greg, Arun, George and Saran.<\/p>\n<p>Special mention goes to to <strong>Francis<\/strong> and <strong>Sivy<\/strong> who were correct, but also showed the thinking behind their answers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New puzzle:<\/strong> A man asked a zookeeper how many beasts and how many birds there were in his zoo. The zookeeper (a frustrated mathematician), answered, &quot;There are 30 heads and 100 feet.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>How many animals and birds were there?
