Resources <\/h2>\n<p>Here are some useful things I've come across recently:<\/p>\n<h2>(a) Calculize <\/h2>\n<p><strong>Suitable for: <\/strong>Everyone<\/p>\n<p><b>Update:<\/b> Unfortunately, this product has disappeared.<\/p>\n<p> <em class=\"textem\">Calculize<\/em> is a &quot;mathematical scripting language that runs from your browser.&quot; Their claim is you can &quot;calculate the way you think. The core library includes advanced statistical and mathematical functions.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>This is quite a sophisticated online graphics calculator.<\/p>\n<p><!--p>Here are some of their examples showing how it works (click on &quot;Run&quot; at the top when you get there): <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul>\n  \n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/calculize.com\/pickhardt\/graphics\">Graphics<\/a> (showing a line graph and a bar graph) <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/calculize.com\/pickhardt\/matrices\">Matrices<\/a> (showing inverse, product, trace, etc) <\/li>\n\n\n\n\n<\/ul-->\n<p>There is a great quote on their home page: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p> By relieving the brain of all unnecessary work, a good notation sets it free to concentrate on more advanced problems, and, in effect, increases the mental power of the race.&nbsp;<br \/>\n    - Alfred North Whitehead, <em>An Introduction to Mathematics<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I totally agree with that one!<\/p>\n<h2>(b) Khan Academy<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Suitable for: <\/strong>Everyone<\/p>\n<p>I've written about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/\">Khan Academy<\/a> before and featured some of his extensive collection of videos. There's even a collection of videos on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/#singapore-math\">Singapore Math<\/a> on their site. <\/p>\n<p>However, Khan Academy is more than just lots of videos. Students can participate in several game-like activities where badges and awards are given out, leading to  completion of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/exercisedashboard?k\">Knowledge Map<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A key difficulty most people have with math is to keep up their motivation. From all I've heard, these activities work well. <\/p>\n<p>You can login using either a Google or Facebook account. <\/p>\n<h2>(c) Education World's Using Technology in the Classroom<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Suitable for: <\/strong>Teachers<\/p>\n<p>Many teachers scratch their heads wondering how they can intelligently use technology to enhance learning. Here's a good collection of articles outlining some useful ideas. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationworld.com\/a_tech\/archives\/technology.shtml\">Using Technology in the Classroom Archive<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>4. Poll Results <\/h2>\n<p><strong>Suitable for: <\/strong>Everyone<\/p>\n<p>The latest poll asked readers how many of their teachers they had &quot;friended&quot; on Facebook. Here are the results. <\/p>\n<p>None: 37%<\/p>\n<p>One or two: 26%<\/p>\n<p>NA - I don&rsquo;t use Facebook: 21%<\/p>\n<p>Several teachers: 17%<\/p>\n<p>Total Votes: <strong>1600<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>This is a relevant question after some US states introduced a new  law earlier this year that prevented teachers communicating with their students through Facebook (or similar), with one Missouri judge blocking the law in August. It's interesting that less than half of those who responded have a &quot;Friend&quot; status with their teachers, and 21% don't even use Facebook.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Latest Poll <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The latest poll asks readers about their <strong>favorite math activity<\/strong>. You can vote on any page in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/\">Interactive Mathematics<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h2>5. Answer for 5 Sep puzzle<\/h2>\n<p>There were several correct answers to the question about the man and the lift. Of coourse, he is too short to reach the buttons for the higher floors. <\/p>\n<p>(You can see the question in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/letters\/intmath-newsletter-golden-spiral-0-math-e-books-cdf-format-6520\">5 Sep IntMath Newsletter<\/a>, and Wilson and Michael's answers which show some further thought.) <\/p>\n<p>This is an example of a puzzle where we only agonize over it once. Once we hear the answer, it stays with us forever.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New puzzle:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week is Equinox (equal day and night, on 23rd Sep), so let's have a calendar-based puzzle.<\/p>\n<p>Julius Caesar adopted a calendar drawn up by an Alexandrian astronomer  in 150 BC which assumed a year of 365.25 days. The true value is 365.242218 days.
