{"id":655,"date":"2007-06-05T00:26:20","date_gmt":"2007-06-05T00:26:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/?p=655"},"modified":"2007-06-05T00:26:20","modified_gmt":"2007-06-05T00:26:20","slug":"paper-less-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/environment\/paper-less-office-655","title":{"rendered":"Paper-less office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Opportunity lost. <\/p>\n<p>When we all moved to using computers, there was potential for reducing paper use to almost zero. <\/p>\n<p>According to Singapore's Straits Times, a survey of 100 local companies showed that 43 actually used more paper than in 2005, when the last survey was done. I'm surprised it wasn't all of them.<\/p>\n<p>It's a joke. I see the following craziness every day:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Paper backups of everything \"for the auditors\"<\/li>\n<li>Printing out emails<\/li>\n<li>Printing out meeting agendas, especially when they have only one or 2 items<\/li>\n<li>Printing out student assignment submissions<\/li>\n<li>Coordinating schedules via paper-based calendars<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What we should require is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bring your laptop to meetings (I always do this. I have all the documentation I need, I can demonstrate websites, or articles, or whatever we are talking about)<\/li>\n<li>Keep things in multiple soft copy (proper electronic backup is better than hard copy any day)<\/li>\n<li>Remember that e-mails are \"e\"<\/li>\n<li>Use collaboration tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/\">Google Docs<\/a> rather than pass around paper copies for amendments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Get with the programme.
