Resources<\/h2>\n<h3>(a) Simpsons math <\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"textem\"><em>The Simpsons<\/em><\/span> is a popular sitcom that's  been running since the late 1980s. There are many mathematical references throughout the show, not a surprise since Al Jean, Executive Producer and head writer, has a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Harvard University.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"padding-right:7px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2018\/06\/simpsons.jpg\" alt=\"Mathematics and Mathematicians of the Simpsons\" width=\"128\" height=\"100\" border=\"0\" \/><\/td>\n<td>\n<p>Dr. Sarah J. Math in the news<\/h2>\n<h3>Dispute over Babylonian tablet <\/h3>\n<p>Dr. Daniel Mansfield of UNSW, Australia studied the &quot;Plimpton 322&quot; baylonian tablet, which is dated around 1800 B.C.E. I was OK with it until around the 1 min 20 sec point where he says, &quot;In Base 10, there are only two exact fractions.&quot; Ah, not so. This prompted me to do a bit more digging and I found this scathing critique by Evelyn Lamb of Scientific American:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/roots-of-unity\/dont-fall-for-babylonian-trigonometry-hype\/\">Don't Fall for Babylonian Trigonometry Hype <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The lesson:<\/strong> Don't believe anything you read or watch. Always double check the facts with independent sources. <\/p>\n<h2>4. Math puzzles <\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/letters\/intmath-newsletter-complex-numbers-evolutes-parabolas-11463#puzzle\">puzzle in the last IntMath Newsletter<\/a> was about &quot;lucky&quot; numbers. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/letters\/intmath-newsletter-complex-numbers-evolutes-parabolas-11463#comments\">correct answer with explanation<\/a> was posted by JDK.<\/p>\n<h3>New math puzzle: Model the EFFEKT observation tower <\/h3>\n<div class=\"imgCenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2018\/06\/EFFEKT-tower.jpg\" alt=\"EFFEKT observation tower.\" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" \/><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/worldarchitecture.org\/architecture-news\/cvepf\/effekt_unveils_design_for_600m_long_treetop_walk_providing_minimum_footprint_on_the_preserved_forest.html\">EFFEKT tower<\/a> in Denmark is a beautiful structure that allows visitors to enjoy forest views as they spiral to the top. <\/p>\n<p>The challenge is to model the spiral walkway's height, <em>z<\/em> as a function of <em>x <\/em>and <em>y<\/em>. That  is, your answer will be in the form <em>z<\/em> = <em>f<\/em>(<em>x<\/em>, <em>y<\/em>).
