Taylor, Maclaurin &amp; Binary Series interactive applets<\/h2>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"padding-right:7px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/series-expansion\/taylor-maclaurin-series-interactive.php\" id=\"tms1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2017\/01\/taylor-maclaurin-interactive.png\" alt=\"Taylor Maclaurin Series interactive applet\" width=\"128\" height=\"100\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td>\n<p>I recently added some new applets that help you explore approximations to various trigonometric and logarithmic functions using infinite series. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/series-expansion\/taylor-maclaurin-series-interactive.php\" id=\"tms2\">Taylor and Maclaurin Series interactive applet<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/series-binomial-theorem\/binomial-series-interactive.php\">Binomial Series interactive applet <\/a><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>These series expansions were incredibly useful when they were first developed by Newton, Taylor and Maclaurin in the 17th and 18th centuries, for their many uses in evaluating function values and in calculus.<\/p>\n<p>Here's some background information so you know what's going on in the above applets:  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/series-expansion\/1-taylor-series.php\" id=\"tsLnk0\">Taylor Series<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/series-expansion\/2-maclaurin-series.php\" id=\"tsLnk1\">Maclaurin Series<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/series-binomial-theorem\/4-binomial-theorem.php\" id=\"tpLnk\">The Binomial Theorem<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>2. Math art:  Valentine's heart<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, it's that time of year again.<\/p>\n<p>There are several ways to draw mathematical hearts. I quite like this one because it uses parametric equations, which are easier to deal with than implicit functions. <\/p>\n<div class=\"imgCenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2017\/02\/mathematical-valentines-heart.png\" alt=\"mathematical valentines heart\" width=\"295\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>Mathematical Valentine's heart<br \/> <span class=\"intmath\"><i>x<\/i> = 5 sin<sup>3<\/sup>(<i>t<\/i>)<\/span>,<br \/> <span class=\"intmath\"><i>y<\/i> = 4 cos(<i>t<\/i>) &minus; 1.3 cos(2<i>t<\/i>)<\/span> <span class=\"intmath\">&minus; 0.6 cos(3<i>t<\/i>)<\/span> <span class=\"intmath\">&minus; 0.2 cos(4<i>t<\/i>)<\/span><\/div>\n<p>It's even simpler  when you use polar equations.<\/p>\n<p>You can see more parametric curves involving trigonometric functions here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/trigonometric-graphs\/7-lissajous-figures.php\">Lissajous Figures<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Happy Valentine's! <\/p>\n<h2>3. Math in the news <\/h2>\n<p>Here's some interesting recent stories involving math.<\/p>\n<p>1. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/student\/news\/students-took-equivalent-300-cups-coffee-caffeine-botched-experiment-northumbria-university-a7546061.html\">Lethal dose of caffeine given to students in university experiment<\/a> <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The court was told about a catalogue of errors that led to the overdose, which included the calculation being done on a mobile phone, the decimal point being put in the wrong place and there being no risk assessment for the test.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>2. <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2017-01-graphics-cards-gaming.html\">Taking graphics cards beyond gaming<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The NVIDIA GPU (graphics processing unit) in your computer is making it possible to solve &quot;systems of multiple simultaneous equations involving thousands to millions of variables&quot; by making use of better and cheaper energy efficiency rather than memory.<\/p>\n<p>3.  <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2016-11-random-discovery-climate-simulations.html\">Random numbers discovery improves climate simulations<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&quot;Small-scale ocean currents are fiendishly difficult to recreate in models, but we found that random numbers do a good job of standing in for them. This Map of Mathematics video by Dominic Walliman  attempts to give a broad outline of the different fields of math.<\/p>\n<p>See  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OmJ-4B-mS-Y\" id=\"mm2\">The Map of Mathematics<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Here's a <a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2017\/02\/map-mathematics2.jpg\">still image of the complete map<\/a> (440 kB)<\/p>\n<p>And here's a <a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2017\/02\/The_Map_of_Mathematics__by_Dominic_Walliman.jpg\">huge version that's clearer<\/a> (770 kB)<\/p>\n<p>By Dominic's own admission, there are 3 errors in the map. Can you spot them?  <\/p>\n<h2>5. Math puzzles<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/letters\/intmath-newsletter-trig-differentiation-applet-art-music-11113#puzzle\">puzzle in the last IntMath Newsletter<\/a> asked about the number of terms in a geometric sequence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intmath.com\/blog\/letters\/intmath-newsletter-trig-differentiation-applet-art-music-11113#comments\">Correct answers with sufficient explanation<\/a> were provided by  Adeyemi, Aksel, Tomas, Don, and Eamon. (Honourable mention to Gerard who was very close.) <\/p>\n<h3 id=\"puzzle\">New math puzzle: Box<\/h3>\n<p>A square piece of metal is made into an open box by cutting a square with side <em>s<\/em> from each corner and turning up the sides. Final thought: Essential fluids<\/h2>\n<p>When I was in northern India recently, visibility on each smoggy morning was often only a few meters.
